Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spine has a sideways curve. There are many types of Scoliosis, diagnosed by the cause of the condition. The most typical type is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis which commonly occurred in female teenager age 10-18 years old.

In 2008, I had been diagnosed with a serious curve of Scoliosis. After going to many doctors to get the second opinion on my condition. I was finally informed that I had gotten 60 degree-cobb-angle of the spine which needs to be operated as soon as possible before it gets worst. Later that year I had been through a big surgery to install 2 pieces of 20 cm aluminium rod into my back for holding my spine up straight.

The first 2 years after surgery I had been physically suffering and discomfort due to the object inside my back didn’t well adjust to my body yet. Moreover that discomforting had led me to the mental affliction of longing to be normal again. I was miserable from the fact that I can’t freely move or use my body as well as before. I never knew why I had this condition as the doctors can’t give me a clear cause of Scoliosis. I never accepted myself when I was younger. I felt like I was the only person in the world who has this condition. None of my diaries has this issue written down while I was crying every night because of the pain.

This graduate project allowed me to recall the bitter experience that I  had been struggling without any comprehension. Besides, it allowed me to examine myself to overcome and accept the imperfection of my body. During the process of research, I had interviewed the cases with Scoliosis both with and without surgery.

I found that many people of my age had the same condition as I did. Most of them have a less serious curve yet they were worried about their body as the severe curve ones. Some of them sent me their x-ray film or their post-surgery picture. Some of them had been through different treatment than others, like Acupuncture or bracing.

Moreover, I had been researching the medical information on Scoliosis issue - Scoliosis symptom, spine and rib anatomy, diagnosis process and treatment. What I found interested is Moire topography which is one of the old school Scoliosis scanning methods.

Moire, visually, is a pattern of shadow lines, arising from the interference of two superimposed gratings. I used this appearance to convey the asymmetrical spine of Scoliosis as it functions in medical technique. I also touched with Bracing - the method of slowing down the curve of Scoliosis. From the interview, some of the cases had been suffering from an inability to move freely and the post-bracing condition, brace wearer lost their back muscle from long term attachment which causes backache afterwards.

To convey the Moire appearance, I used Accordion pleat in most area. By draping and manipulating pleats randomly along with the form of the garment, I found it limited to be curved alike Scoliosis treatment that is limited to un-curve the spine when comes the surgery.
